Are older women more likely to use HRT than younger women?

Yes. Among women receiving menopause treatment, 76.3% of those ages 57 to 64 had an HRT prescription, compared with 56.1% of women ages 45 to 56.

How do HRT prescription rates vary by race and ethnicity in the United States?

As of 1999, HRT prescription rates varied significantly by demographic group, with White women reporting the highest rates:

  • White women: 33%
  • African American women: 25%
  • Latina women: 23%
  • Asian women: 21%
  • Soviet immigrant women: 6.6%

Are Black women less likely to be prescribed hormone replacement therapy?

Black women are 26% less likely to be prescribed HRT than women of other races.

What is the most common form of estrogen-based HRT?

Estrogen patches became the most common form of estrogen-based HRT by February 2026, with use increasing from 6.2 to 19.9 prescriptions per 1,000 women since 2018.

Has use of vaginal estrogen creams increased since 2018?

One study found that the use of vaginal estrogen creams rose from 2.8 to 14.3 per 1,000 women from 2018 to 2026, a 413.3% increase over the study period.
